COMMUNITY WORK

I served as a member of the board of directors for the Urban Alliance on Race Relations from 2018 to 2020. In that role, I spearheaded a letter campaign to Munk Debate advisors and funders requesting that Steve Bannon be refused to debate David Frum on November 2, 2018.

I co-founded the first Canadian chapter of Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom ( https://sosspeace.org) in 2017. Media stories featuring my remarks and photograph were published in CBC, Metro News, Muslim Link, IQRA.ca, The Link Canada, and Canadian Jewish News (all August, 2017), and Global News (December, 2017)

I successfully nominated Ronald Lee, international Romani community leader, for an Honorary LLD at Queen’s University for fall convocation in 2013.

At the Toronto Roma Community Centre, I worked as a volunteer settlement worker and part-time assistant to Gina Csanyi, the former Executive Director from May 2011 – August 2013. I provided advocacy and support for several refugee claimants and their families. This involved my attendance at their Immigration and Refugee Board hearings, federal court hearings, letters of support supplementing their refugee claims and Permanent Resident status applications, research in support of their applications, and petitions.

As the volunteer grant-writer for the Centre, I wrote a successful grant application to the Ontario Ministry of Child and Youth Services for Toronto’s first full time, permanent Romani youth outreach worker in 2012. Other successful grant applications were to Toronto Arts Council and Government of Canada’s Inter-Action: Multiculturalism Funding Program for International Roma Day in 2015. In 2012 and 2013, my grant-writing efforts for the Roma Community Centre led to funding from the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network/Woodgreen Community Services for a preventative health program for Romani seniors. Anisha Ashwin helped me with a successful grant application to the Law Foundation of Ontario for a pilot legal clinic at the Roma Community Centre in 2012.
